Introducing Our New Content Writer, Jorie Page
Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. After I graduated from Westminster College in Salt Lake, I wanted to move somewhere that was completely opposite of Utah, and decided to make the journey to Portland, Oregon. I ended up living in Hillsboro, which was a very serendipitous occurrence, since it allowed me to meet Michelle Hedegard, who told me about Mockingbird Creative.
How did you end up working for Mockingbird?
I have a BA in English, but I hadn’t found a job that would allow me to put my writing skills to good use in Oregon. When I met Michelle, she happened to mention that her company was hiring for a content writing position for their Portland location, and I mentioned that I needed a job writing. They let me try out the position to see if it was a good fit, and it was absolutely perfect. Working for Mockingbird is the best thing that could have happened to me and I’m so grateful everything has lined up like this.
What is your favorite part about writing?
I love shaping language. It’s so satisfying to have an idea of what I want to say and then sculpt it into a beautiful and functional sentence. That’s why I love all kinds of writing, from advertisement copy to creative writing and poetry.
What is your favorite animal?
Dogs! I love dogs! I love all animals, but nothing makes me happier than a happy dog.
What is your favorite food?
Sushi is my absolute favorite. I’m a huge fan of Japanese, Italian, and Thai food. I’m pretty adventurous when it comes to food and I’ll try just about anything. I had a nice haggis at a Scottish festival a few years ago.
What is your favorite genre to read?
I love sci-fi and fantasy. Right now, I’m reading The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. In the last year, I’ve read some really awesome sci-fi and fantasy books, including The Name of the Wind, The Left Hand of Darkness, and Hyperion. Eventually, I want to read all the Nebula Award winners.
What is your favorite genre of movie?
This would probably come as a surprise to a lot of people who know me as an acquaintance because I’m such a shy, anxious person, but I absolutely love horror movies, especially zombie movies. I watch probably between two and five horror/suspense/scary movies every week and I keep a running list of my favorites that I post on Facebook the week before Halloween as a list of recommendations for my friends.
What is your favorite color to dye your hair?
I really love having purple hair. Honestly, though, the best thing is just to have a fun new color, no matter what the color is. I have purple hair right now, and I think I’m going to try turquoise next time.
Are you a night owl or an early bird?
Definitely a night owl. I start to really hit my stride somewhere around 2 PM most days and get a second wind at about 10 PM.
What do you do when you’re not working?
Whenever I’m not working, you can find me watching scary movies, reading, or – most often – doing artwork. I do pet portraits with oil paints and people portraits with pen and watercolors.
